Scott A. Vierstra, P.E. - Principal
Qualities:  Self-motivated to provide maximum value to customer and community, strong technical, analytical and intuitive problem solving skills.  Interact effectively with others and encourage team efforts.
Work Experience:
1981-1999: Senior Engineer, Steam Generation Section, Mechanical Engineering,
American Electric Power Service Corporation, Columbus, Ohio.
Have been intimately involved with the operation, performance and maintenance of 22,000 megawatts worth of utility coal fired steam generators and their auxiliaries with project engineering/management responsibilities.  Some highlights included the following:

Developed American Electric Power's plan to comply with the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment’s rules on the control of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from its fossil fuel fired steam generators while developing expertise in both combustion side and post combustion control technologies.

Conducted R&D and developed low cost combustion emission controls for roof-fired steam generators (Patent No’s. 5,771,823, 5,960,723 and 6,155,183).

Developed test procedure and analyses of sources of emissions from cyclone fired steam generators.

Developed modifications for major domestic supplier's low NOx burners to achieve additional 10% reduction in NOx emissions rate on five 800 megawatt coal fired steam generators.

Integrated components from competing burner suppliers to restore unit efficiency initially lost with a low NOx burner retrofit while maintaining NOx emission rate reductions.

Services loaned at a major domestic boiler manufacturer's request for development/analysis of their potential future generation of pulverized coal burners.

Recognized with Exceptional Employee Award in 1996 for design modifications producing $50 million in cost savings.

Design of overfire air system for 210 megawatt cyclone fired boiler series, producing 60% reduction in NOx emissions while saving >1% in unit O&M.

1999 to Present: Principal of SAVvy Engineering, LLC, Canal Winchester, Ohio.
Providing engineering services to electric utility industry and equipment suppliers including:

Air Monitor Corporation, Allegheny Energy, American Electric Power, Arizona Public Service, Cinergy, Consumers Energy, Dayton Power & Light, EPRI, Grand Haven Board of Light & Power, Merrick & Company, Michigan Municipal Electric Association, Advanced Burner Technologies, Mobotec USA, Reaction Engineering International, Riley Power Inc. and Tennessee Valley Authority.  Strong emphasis on combustion, firing and emissions related problems and solutions along with flow and heat transfer related issues.  Also providing burner and overfire air design modifications.

Education:

B.S. Mechanical Engineering and B.S. Life Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1981.

Earned Professional Engineer's License for the State of Ohio, 1988.

Completed Ohio State University/American Electric Power Management Training Courses, 1996.
